The AI + web3 version of Meitu Xiuxiu: an AI agent sends an image URL, pays a few cents, and gets back a processed image.

What this is

A pay-per-use image editing workbench for AI agents. Four single operations: background removal and AI upscaling at 2 cents each; resizing and compression at half a cent each. There is also a process bundle: a chain of operations in one payment produces one image. No account, no API key — it can be discovered through MCP (the common tool interface for agents).

What problem it solves

When agents do work for people, they keep hitting tasks they can't do themselves: removing the white background from a product photo, upscaling a small image so it can be printed, resizing it to exactly 800 pixels wide. These are deterministic pixel operations — no matter how strong a language model is, it cannot compute them precisely, so they must be outsourced. But an agent has no account and no credit card, so traditional image APIs are closed to it.

Use cases

An agent that maintains product images for e-commerce: it takes the supplier's original image, removes the white background, resizes it to platform specs, and compresses it to WebP. Three steps in one payment, and it gets back a URL ready to list. The official site puts it this way: the agent has the recipe and the ingredients; x402image is the kitchen.

Highlights

  • Pay before work; if the job fails, you don't pay: processing starts only after settlement is confirmed, and a failed operation is not charged. This also neutralizes attacks like "maxing out compute costs."
  • Adding a capability doesn't touch the core: each operation is a plugin; adding one is just registering one more.
  • AI upscaling validated with a control group: before launch, a control group with "same parameters except the AI flag" was compared by hash, which caught a bug where the platform silently ignored the parameter; it was redone and launched the same day.

Where it is now

Launched on mainnet on July 16, 2026, at x402image.org; active in the MCP directory. I have a clear-eyed view of the moat: anyone can use Cloudflare's image capabilities; what I'm selling is the rails that package them into something agents can auto-discover, pay per use, and use without creating an account. Right now all settlements are tests I paid for myself; there are no third-party calls yet.
